Message from the Superintendent
Dear School Community:
I would like to welcome you to a new year at the Lassen Union High School District. The 2013-2014 year will provide greater opportunities for board members, parents and families, staff, and of course, our students. Both Lassen High and Credence High will experience a six period day allowing teachers to teach and students to learn for longer periods of time each day. There is excitement in the curriculum as the departments are embracing the implementation of the State’s new Common Core State Standards both in English and Mathematics. The Common Core State Standards will also be implemented throughout all departments with the teaching of our newly adopted “literacy strand.”
For the first time in recent years our district has adopted the full implementation of a multiple assessment system. All students will know what they know and are able to do through the Measurement of Academic Progress assessment system. This system has allowed us to place students in classes that will remediate their knowledge and skills in both reading and mathematics. Parallel to the assessment system we have created a class schedule to accommodate the needs of our academically deficient learners as well as for those students who wish to accelerate in their learning. We are also requiring all Advanced Placement students to take the examination. By having students take the examinations we can measure the teaching of the curriculum and the student learning in those college courses.
I wish to invite you to visit our campuses, be in our classrooms and to observe our teachers teaching and students learning. Come to our academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities. Enjoy watching our students perform in local, regional, and state competitions this year. You will quickly find that our students measure up with the highest performing students in the state.
Finally, just one parting word. Please make certain that your student is in school every day and every period of the day. It is important for their learning and their success to be in the classroom at all times. The learning missed when a student misses a class for any reason is simply too difficult to replace.
